The Cat Subway Art comes as a high resolution jpeg - ready for you to print on your own computer, or taken to a place like Kinkos or Office Max to be printed. It is sized for a regular 8 1/2 x 11 piece of cardstock or photo paper, but it can be trimmed to 8 x 10 if framing is desired.

I've had this cute spoon rest for years. I think my mother-in-law gave it to me during the time when we had our first calico cat named Callie.

After using it this morning, I was washing it off, and I turned it over and couldn't believe my eyes! I'm sure I've seen the back of this spoon rest many times, but it didn't click until today!

Meet Fredrika!

Here is what Best Friends has to say about this pretty girl:

This dry desert air makes it so hard to maintain a decent hairdo....especially with long golden tresses.

But Fredrika, who is a charter member of a famous cat building at Best Friends called the Colonel's Barracks, is a dignified kitty who doesn't let that get her down. She has a favorite spot in the high up in the rafters staked out, but she is an old hand at the sanctuary, and will come down to pose for a camera when it is requested. She also comes inside at night. She is tolerating people much better than she used to, and she gets along with all the other cats in her room. Fredrika was born in 1998 and came to Best Friends from another animal organization near Phoenix.

Fredrika is happy to have a safe place to live, but she still hopes some day for a forever home. If you can't give her that, would you be willing to sponsor her to help her maintain her elevated position here at Best Friends? She will thank you for it!

National Feral Cat Day

Today is National Feral Cat Day - a day for awareness and education about these special cats.

Feral cats live in communities all across the world. They typically live together with other ferals, and to the non-cat person, they may appear to be stray cats.

They are different from strays because they have been without love and touch for so long that they don't trust humans. Therefore, they have a difficult time being part of a family like a regular house cat. As hard as it is for me to accept, feral cats enjoy living outside. This is all they have known and they have adapted to their environment. They know where to hide and where to go to be safe.

That doesn't mean they don't need compassion and someone to feed them. There are wonderful volunteers that spend much of their own money and time taking care of feral cat colonies. These cats need to be humanely trapped, spayed and neutered, and returned to their colony. If feral cats are taken to a shelter, it is more likely they will be euthanized because of their inability to be adopted.

This is my Kentucky front porch visitor. I believe he might be a sibling to my Inky because they look so much alike. Inky, however, was very friendly and trusting. Domino, as I like to call him, has become too feral and only visits at feeding time. Before I moved to Arizona, he would eventually let me sit on the porch while he ate, but I could never get very close to him, and touching him was out of the question - he would swat at me.

It breaks my heart that feral cats don't know the love and touch that they deserve. Please visit Alley Cat Allies for lots of great information on feral cats.

Feed a feral if you have one living in your neighborhood. It will do your heart good!

Free from all the noise!

Can you imagine living at an industrial site? Parker was part of a feral cat colony at a Boeing site in California for the first year or so of his life. Then they tore the plant down, so Parker came to Best Friends for safety.

What a different home he has now! Cozy beds and plentiful food instead of noise and scary machines. He is extremely agile, and friendly with the other cats in his room. Parker hasn't gotten over his shyness with strangers, but he's grown calmer with his caregivers and appreciates his comfortable life at the sanctuary. The queen of the castle is having a birthday! Samoa is 11 years old - happy birthday pretty girl!

Samoa definitely rules the roost in our home. She gets very annoyed that there are so many boys in the house, and she isn't afraid to smack at them or throw a hiss their way.

Plastic Bag Caddy!

Plastic bags . . . . . gotta have them by the hundreds when you own cats! They are my item of choice when it comes to cleaning out litterboxes. I know it isn't in to request plastic bags when you're in the stores, but it is one way to recycle them!

My friends save them for me . . . . one friend even mails them to me! And they get jammed in the closet and look terrible! Not anymore, because I'm now carrying a plastic bag caddy in the Etsy shop!

These storage bags will hold a lot of plastic bags - big opening at the top to stuff them all in, and a smaller opening at the bottom to allow one bag to be dispensed at a time!

This is the purrfect item for showing off some cute cat fabric! You can organize and be stylish at the same time!

Knead On!

Is your cat a kneader? There is something so precious about watching a cat knead. I guess because it is comforting to them. It takes them back to their kittenhood when they kneaded on their Mommy's belly before nursing.

I recently made some kneading blankies for the shop. These can be used to protect a favorite chair, sofa, or bed where your cat likes to nap. Or it can be placed on your lap if your kitty is a lap cat. Made from fleece, these kneading blankies are the most pawsome place to knead!

When my cat, Calvin, joined Catster, he started an I Knead You group. The group has 784 members - all cats that like to knead (and a few that drool while they knead!).

A Friend Journeys to the Bridge

Hazel Lucy became an angel today. She was 13 years old, and was very loved by her Mom, Julie, and by her thousands of Catster friends.

She was a big cheerleader for The Cat in the Clover, and I will always love her for that! She was a Catster legend, and started so many traditions that will continue. It was a sad day on Catster. If you aren't a part of a supportive group like Catster, it might be difficult to understand, but we really care about each other's cats, and we grieve when sad things happen.

Rest in peace, sweet girl . . . . . you will be missed!

Poor Ollie!

New Line of Party Hats for Cats!

I'm pleased to announce a new line of party hats for cats (and small doggies) in my Etsy shop!

A Catster friend asked if I could make a birthday hat for her cat, so it inspired me to design something that would actually fit either in front of or behind cats' ears. Most hats have to fit over one or both ears, and cats don't like that very much!

These hats appear flat but they actually have lightweight cardboard and fiberfill inside. Their design allows me to ship them at a lower cost because they fit in an envelope rather than a box!

They also have an adjustable slide to snuggly fit under any cat's neck. Here is Inky modeling a hat that matches his fur!

Samoa is all pooped out after partying in her hat!

Newman gladly shows cats how to get the hat off with one swipe of a paw! Gotta love that Newman for his demonstration abilities!

I've got about a dozen or so hats finished, and they will be added to the shop sometime this evening. Stop by and check them out!

When Calvin made his journey to the bridge back in October of 2009, I started making Calvin Collars in his memory. For every 25 sold, I sponsor an orange cat in Calvin's memory.

Is it safe to come out? If you'd survived the horrors of Hurricane Katrina, you might be hesitant to face the real world again, too. And if, like Saigon, you're a feral cat, the world becomes that much scarier. It's hard enough to survive when you're a feral, but when your whole world's disappeared, it's almost impossible.

Born in 2002, Saigon's not only handsome, but he's also very fortunate -- he was saved from the ruins. He originally went to a good Siamese rescue. However, he was loathe to leave his feral ways behind, and didn't adjust well there. So, he came to Best Friends, where we have comfortable, roomy areas set up for feral cats. Here, they can be just who they are, but safe from the dangers of life on the streets. Saigon is settling in well. He watches everything closely, but doesn't bolt away. He's even slowly getting to know his caregivers. With time, and all the space that he needs, Saigon may decide to give his trust fully to humans.

This handsome mancat is Utu. He lives in Australia, and he reminds me of Calvin - doesn't Utu have the most beautiful eyes? I also think he has a pawsome name - Utu is a Sumerian sun god, and what cat doesn't worship the sun?

He is modeling a Calvin Collar that he received from his secret santa, Oly, this past Christmas. I think it also looks good as a Valentine collar!

Inky Dinky Do!

This is the newest of my front porch visitors. He is so adorable, and friendly, and doesn't live in the neighborhood. I get so angry when I think about people either dumping their pets, or leaving them outside 24/7.

It didn't take long for Inky to warm up to me, and it just shows that all our pets want is some attention and love. He rolls around and hugs on my foot!

What a handsome face on this mancat!

And nothing breaks my heart more than to be sitting in the living room watching television to look over and see this! Newman will go over and try to play with Inky through the window - it is so adorable!

If anyone has it in their heart to give this wonderful kitty a home, it would make my day!

Angel Merlin

Merlin was known as the cat wizard! He could magically make things disappear. Not only was he a handsome mancat, he was a very gentle kitty who lived with special friends he called his creatures! Most cats would want to chase and eat the cute creatures that Merlin lived with, but they were Merlin's friends!

Merlin made his journey to the bridge in November of last year. His Mom wanted a special angel cat made in memory of Merlin. I hope in some way this comforts her as the one year anniversary of Merlin's passing approaches.

The second Cat Angel from my Etsy shop is a very special kitty friend named Sammie. Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of Sammie's journey to the Rainbow Bridge due to liver lymphoma.

Sammie lived with his family from the time he was just a kitty until he was almost 17 years old! He and his Mom had a very special bond, and they enjoyed their daily walks to the garden to check out the catnip!

I love this photo of Sammie for several reasons. Mainly because he was such a handsome mancat with a beautiful, gentle face. I also smile when I see it because he is laying on a blankie that I crocheted.

The cat could hang or sit if propped against something. The cat's name could be added or left off.

An angel cat would sell for $8.00 plus shipping. The angel measures 6" x 5" (at the widest part). Let me know if you like the idea!

Calvin's First Birthday at the Bridge

Today is Calvin's birthday. He would have been 19 years old. This picture is from his birthday last July.

Our family has not been the same since he left. He was the leader . . . . . . the gentle spirit that told all the others when it was time to eat, and when it was time to play. He was the most handsome cat with gorgeous green eyes that did all his talking. Those eyes made me melt!

His Catster pals started a special stroll of photos for his birthday - it was a nice surprise this morning, and of course, brought tears to my eyes.

I know Calvin is having a pawsome party at the Rainbow Bridge with all his angel pals. We love you, Calvin, and you will always be a bright light in our hearts!

Red Badge of Courage

My handsome mancat, Gleek, has been in the hospital with crystals. The other day he went in the litterbox and sat there for about 10 minutes - unable to pee. In case you have never dealt with a situation like this, it can be life threatening. I've read that cats can die in 24-48 hours if blocked.

I got him to the vet immediately, and sure enough, he was blocked with crystals. He had a catheter put in, and IVs to help flush his kidneys. His bloodwork indicated no problems with his kidney values, so we caught it before any kidney damage was done.

He had to spend the night at the hospital, and yesterday morning, his catheter had gotten twisted - he must have done a lot of dancing - so they took it out earlier than they wanted to. They wanted to observe him for awhile to make sure he was okay. He came home last night with special food and his red badge of courage!

He couldn't wait to get that bandage off so he could remove the stink! He is currently locked in our bedroom so I can monitor everything. He spent a lot of time last night in and out of the litterbox - peeing very small amounts.

I'm hoping he doesn't have to make a trip back to the vet's office over the weekend. He has lots of pals purring for him!

Today we are reviewing cat toys from Play-N-Squeak. We received two of their interactive toys: the Tethered & Feathered Play Wand, and the Bounce & Pounce Play Wand.

We decided to test one toy and have a giveaway for the other toy! Newman made the choice, and thought the Bounce & Pounce Play Wand looked like it would be fun.

The mouse has a little piece of plastic that you remove in order to get the squeaking started! Samoa thought the mouse was cute.
